Anybody any idea how the scoring system works?

I need 500 pts to go up to level 2. How many do I need for the next levels after that?

I got some points on the prologue, mini transat and clipper. How many do you get in each race? How is that dependent on ranking?

I see the major league sailors have reached level 12. Have they been participating for the past 25 years already? Or is there a secret password "IDKFA" to reach the next level?

The old running ranking that has been there for 2 years or so was converted - top 100 players or so got the highest level, but were spaced only 1 point apart, despite their original results.

Then there were 4 preliminary races to test the new platform that also brought you points.

The level-up points were documented somewhere ... if not in the FAQ then I saw it in the protocol dump. Can dig it out if someone is interested.

I got 24 points for finishing 11601. My game level is 1. I got 375 coins for my unused cards. I believe I had 75 cards from the barrel. I used one programming card during the past leg. I had all equipment except the code 0.

I don't remember the distribution of the cards, but I believe I had plenty weather, autosails and programming cards, not so many help cards.

I will use the money gained to equip my boat for the next leg.

I got 109 points for my 139th place :-(
220 credits for my unused cards and I earned 174 credits.
Very poor balance.

What game level player are you? I understand that etrille17 who got negative 17 points for 2368 is a level 12 player.

I‘m currently ranked 65th.

I think that also makes you a level 12 player. I suspect level 12 players get fewer points than lower level players. How does that work?

The previous VSR ranking was supposed to be based on some type of modified ELO points AFAIR

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system

In such system (like in bridge IMP system) you can actually lose points by winning against weaker opponent, or underperforming.

The current system is not explained at all. It's not clear if it's the old system with certain amount of points being assigned as "levels" and only top level players being ranked worldwide, or something completely different.

Edit: archive.org does not think so. Maybe it was about the inshore races.

Which reminds me that I was going to dig the VSR levels from the game data:

Level Points
0 500
1 1000
2 2000
3 3000
4 4000
5 5000
6 6000
7 8000
8 10000
9 14000
10 20000
11 30000
12 50000
13 999999999

This seems to be in a zero-based programming notation. In the user interface levels are displayed as 1-14 (14 is golden, not shown as number)

My testing boat is level 1 with 345 points, the primary is Golden (14) with 52490 pts.

The ranking for my testing boat also says "reach level 14 to be ranked worldwide" on the bottom. That hides the actual number of active players.

Hi Cvetan

I'm VSR level 7, with 5707 points
Next level is on 6000

Do you know how are the points for position in each race calculated?

I remember that there was a public note about how the points are calculated in previous version of VR.

No idea. The wayback machine says this about the previous ranking, but it has obviously changed now:

For the first 10% to arrive:
My points = 1st place points x 1/ square root of my position

After the first 10%, the distribution is a descending linear relationship to the number of points for the last person ranked in the race.

yes, this math functioned on previous versions

don't know what did sideshow got
I have 80 pts for finishing as 524
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-10-30 | 16:40:19
Big Bird got 102 points for 151th place at level 14
The other boat got 51 points at level 1 and 21xx place

With a few more data points we could correlate the function used ;-)

class 4 from 2000 to 3000
class 5 from 3000 to 4000
class 8 from 6000 to 8000
class 13 from 30000 to 50000
class 14 over 50000

my best

class 1 , from 0 to 500

I looked at the elo rating scheme, double partial differential equations of hyperbolic cosine etcetera.

I think it turns out that you get some average of the points of the boats that finish around you. If they have more points than you, then you get more points. If they have fewer points, you may loose points.

That may be the reason why it takes approx one hour to calculate your points. The program needs to wait till the next 100 or so boats get in.

That seems reasonable.

At this time, I got +54 VSR points for class level 13 with a place 384 ... !!
I got -5 VSR points for class level 8 with a place 28363 ... !!
I got +8 VSR points for class level 5 with a place 26842 ... !!
I got +15 VSR points for class level 1 with a place 31426 ... !!
