Foils, but the real boat does not have them and Beneteau would object. The race is obviously an ad campaign.

Funny thing is some of other boats also don't have foils but they only renamed them on the Caravelle cause it was ridiculous.

I haven't entered this race yet... Have they added something that would cost more than normal options? Or is it just another name for the same foils option?

And... do we know if the formulas are remaining the same for how things like polish and foils ("first line pack"), etc, operate? It just occurred to me that they might do some race-specific mods to those equations, if they want it to be representative of what Beneteau would call a "first line oceanis 40.1"...

The prices are identical to a normal cat5 race. Foils are renamed "First Line". The format and definitions in the polars file are exactly the same as usual (penalties with and without winch option, foiling ranges, bad sail tolerance etc.)

Sampling the sail speeds yields a performance between the Caravel and Figaro2 or Mini 6.50.

If I understand the French correctly in the pop-up window that's encouraging users to enter the race, there are two prizes... Both are stand-up paddle boards:

https://laboutique-beneteau.com/en/stand-up-paddle/334-stand-up-paddle.html

Google translate is telling me the first one is "for the winner of the race, all rankings combined"... I'm not sure what "all rankings combined" would mean...

And the other is "by draw among the first 1000 players"... I'm not sure if that's the first 1000 to enter or the first 1000 to finish. Almost 10,000 have entered so far, so if it's the first 1,000 entries, then that one is already gone.

YM,

One SUP for the winner all categories
One SUP for un player drawn among top 1000 (to the finish)

Thanks. Do you know what "all categories" means? Usually, there is simply one overall ranking.

Edit: I think I understand now... They're calling the "first line" boat with the foils a different "category"... But the winner of that prize will be the first boat overall. So I think the point is simply to say that if you are the best "not first line" boat, that doesn't qualify you for a prize (unless you somehow beat the "fist line" boats.

Probably yes. I do not intend to do this race, a registered French player could perhaps give more details on the "first line pack".

"options": {
"foil": {
"nameKey": "_firstline",

The foils may be unused in the right circumstances. Not entirely unlikely in this race. So you may actually win in the wrong "class"
Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2020-05-15 | 13:25:45
Good point, at least for those running on credits. There's no value in "first line" if the wind never exceeds 11 kts (or if it only exceeds 11 while going upwind).

If it's still possible to buy options after the start, you might even see boats change "class" after the start, just by buying foils... which I'm sure would lead to a bunch of inexperienced users freaking out and declaring those boats "cheaters"... It could actually happen with a lot of experienced boats who choose to run on credits, if the initial forecast is iffy about foils and then confirms the need later.

Will you be able to get this race (and Tresco) enabled for routing? No pressure - just wondering.

Ooops. They are available since yesterday via the extensions, but I forgot the home page links. Fixed.

P.S. In both races the first gate can't be added to the router because the turn is < 90 degrees.

Thanks. Tresco looks like an interesting start... Very light winds. I hope they don't postpone again like they did with Goa. If that forecast holds, I'll probably do that race. I like light wind coastal races. (In real life, too) I guess I'm a little weird that way.

Benetau... Hmm... Too early to trust the forecast, but for the moment, I'd be getting to the first mark at 4 AM local time, which is the middle of the day in France... which is not a recipe for success. We'll see. (Also, for the moment, it looks like "first line" foils would actually get used for at least the end of the first leg).

Edit: The forecasts are totally unstable for both races. No way to estimate timing or which options are best until closer to the starts.

If it seems like the forecasts have gotten a lot less reliable/stable recently, it's because they have. Commercial airliners provide a lot of the data for the initial conditions in the models, which for reasons, they are not doing at the moment.

Very interesting, thanks! I assumed it was just because those races are light wind, which tends to be unreliable anyway.

Interesting indeed. Haven't thought of that. Looked around and found this ECMWF statement

Can we look at that translation again, s'il vous plait?

My reading of the French version, the English version and the Google Translate version all lead me to believe that they are giving away a paddle for an SUP, not an actual SUP.

Not that it matters, they'd have to offer an actual Oceanis 40.1 to get me to enter, cause that I could sell and get a Pogo.

This page on Beneteau's site seems to be clear they aren't just the paddle ... I had the same concern bmertens. Ad it is clear that its 1st 1000 finishers for the draw YM.

https://www.beneteau.com/en/beneteau-evenement/beneteau-cup-virtual-regatta

There's also a third category for Beneteau owners with much better odds - draw from top 30 - presumably have to enter a partner code ... hmm ... I'm good friends with a Beneteau owner ...
Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2020-05-17 | 14:05:15
Get him to register an entry for you to sail. Don't use the partner code with your usual ID... Otherwise if they see this thread, they'll disqualify you if you win.

I wonder if they're giving all Beneteau owners free full-pack entries.

Hmmm ... https://laboutique-beneteau.com/en/stand-up-paddle/334-stand-up-paddle.html says its inflatable!
Post by iconPost by UUnet | 2020-05-17 | 14:15:16
As I am French, I understand that it will be 3 paddles to win:1 paddle for the winner of the race, all rankings (and options installed) combined, 1 paddle to be won by lot among the first 1000 boats arrived and 1 paddle to be won by lot among the first 30 competitors of the group Beneteau Owners.
I confirm that it is inflatable paddle, who's cost 499 eur on the Beneteau's web site.

So in French, does "paddle" refer to the whole contraption? ie) the "hull' you stand on and the thingy you hold in your hands to make it move? In English, "paddle" would mean only your propulsive tool. It's not out of the question for a top quality carbon fibre paddle to cost 500 EUR.

Sorry, my Canadian French vocabulary only has words for frozen watersports (⊙.☉)7
Post by iconPost by L-Oustal_ST | 2020-05-18 | 16:16:01
Yes, in France, paddle = SUP, the hull.
And pagaie = SUP paddle 8-)
Post by iconPost by toxcct | 2020-05-18 | 16:25:28
In french, we use the word "paddle" for the paddle board.

The word for the oar is "pagaie", so no, we don't use both words, but we use them for different meanings ;)
