Magellan 4

Is it real that we should cross the Strait of Magellan with these boats? In general it blows wind from the east, so in narrow areas it would be impossible to pass with the head wind. Any ideas?. In narrow areas we will have a bottleneck of boats. :)

@Mak08, all gates buoys seem to be circling in the wrong direction.
Is it only a display issue in the Dashboard, or are they drunk at VR ?

I noticed this too. The arrows have the wrong color too. I think this came in when
the mark coordinates tooltip was added (initially stb coordinates were displayed on the port mark and vice versa).

So you confirm this is a rendering issue then ?

Regarding the gates and groups, it seems we have 2 possibles routes (one south the Horn, and the other one zigzaging between the shores), both of which seem to validate independently from the other.
So the north route seems shorter, but way more difficult because of the polars (Caravelles can't sail upwind under approx. 60°, which is a pretty big angle), so I'm not sure at all this is a safe route to the French Polynesia...

It's a rendering issue, but that's all I can say.

I thought we were not allowed to leave the Horn to stbd, but maybe you're right.

Yeah, looking at the gates, we have 4 groups, each containing 2 gates (one north and one south of the Horn).
I guess a group is validated once one gate of this group is validated (and as we cannot validate all of them obviously, it makes it pretty obvious that they allow 2 separate routes ; one shorter but harder, or the classic but longer one south)

I'm pretty sure now VR changed the route. See the post by Tarahumara_POR
in the older Magellan thread: http://zezo.org/forum.pl?tid=7595

Hmm the strait would be close to impossible in headwind.

With the grounding report differing between client and server you may never get out of there.

Maybe just wait for favorable winds, the way they actually did it back then.

that's what I said. It is impossible to cross the Strait of Magellan with these boats with east wind.
